Growing in the Rhythms of the Christian Life
The Spiritual Formation Pathway
The Christian Practices Initiative invites believers to walk a pathway of spiritual formation shaped by the historic rhythms of the Christian life. For generations, Christians have discovered that practices such as prayer, Scripture meditation, silence, community, and faithful stewardship help nurture a life that remains attentive to the presence and work of God. These practices form the foundation of spiritual maturity and help believers learn to live faithfully in every season of life.
The Formation Pathway provides a simple framework that introduces these practices in a way that is both accessible and deeply rooted in the historic life of the Church. By engaging these rhythms intentionally, believers develop habits that strengthen faith, deepen character, and support a lifetime of faithful discipleship.
The Spiritual Formation Pathway
The Spiritual Formation Pathway is a clear and accessible journey into life with God. Drawing from Scripture, historic Christian teaching, and the classic rhythms of prayer and devotion, it helps believers move beyond isolated spiritual practices into a coherent life of formation.
Rather than offering disconnected topics, this pathway brings together the foundational rhythms of Christian life, the historic pattern of spiritual growth, and a guided sequence of courses designed to support lasting transformation.

The pathway can be understood through the image of a tree: roots, trunk, and fruit, together with the historic movement of spiritual growth through purification, illumination, and union.
The Shape of the Journey
For centuries, Christians have understood spiritual growth as a journey shaped by intentional rhythms of prayer, Scripture, and devotion. The Spiritual Formation Pathway draws on this historic vision by describing formation through three classic movements:
Purification
Learning to reorder life around God
Illumination
Learning to hear and recognize His voice
Union
Learning to abide in Him in a life that is increasingly integrated and whole
This is not a rigid sequence, but a living journey. From the beginning, believers are invited into all three dimensions of formation.
The Tree of Spiritual Life
The Spiritual Formation Pathway can also be understood through the image of a tree. This image helps us see how the Christian life is rooted, strengthened, and expressed over time.
The Roots: The Rhythms of Christian Life
At the foundation of the spiritual life are three rhythms taught by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
Prayer • Fasting • Giving
These practices anchor the believer’s life in God.
-
Prayer cultivates communion with God
-
Fasting trains the heart in humility and dependence
-
Giving expresses love for others and trust in God’s provision
Together, these rhythms nourish the entire life of faith.
The Trunk: A Rule of Life
The trunk of the tree represents a Rule of Life.
A rule of life is a pattern of spiritual practices that helps believers remain rooted in Christ. It provides a sustainable structure for daily rhythms such as prayer, Scripture, worship, work, rest, and generosity.
Rather than being rigid or legalistic, a rule of life creates space for a steady and faithful life with God.
The Fruit: A Life Lived in the Kingdom
The goal of spiritual formation is not simply personal growth, but a life that reflects the character of Christ and participates in His work in the world.
As believers are formed through prayer, Scripture, stillness, and faithful daily practice, that formation begins to bear fruit through love, humility, wisdom, generosity, and kingdom faithfulness in everyday life.
The Ladder of Virtues

The Ladder of Virtues: How Formation Takes Shape
While the tree helps us understand the structure of spiritual formation, the Ladder of Virtues helps us understand how that formation is expressed in daily life. The Christian life is not simply about learning practices—it is about becoming a certain kind of person. As believers engage the rhythms of prayer, Scripture, silence, community, and stewardship, God forms specific virtues within them over time.
Repentance → Obedience → Generosity → Silence → Forgiveness → Meekness → Self-Control → Purity → Humility → Union
This is not a rigid sequence, but a picture of growth. As we remain rooted in Christ, these qualities take shape in us, leading toward deeper communion with God and greater love for others. While the tree and ladder help us understand the structure of spiritual formation, the Formation Pathway Courses provide a practical way to walk this journey in everyday life.
The Formation Pathway Courses
A Guided Journey of Spiritual Formation
The Formation Pathway Courses are designed to help believers move beyond isolated learning into a coherent journey of spiritual formation. Each course builds upon the others, guiding participants into a life shaped by the historic rhythms of the Christian faith.
Rather than offering disconnected topics, this pathway provides a structured and sustainable approach to growth—rooted in Scripture, informed by the wisdom of the Church, and lived out in everyday life.
Purification
Reordering Life Around God
Purification is the beginning of formation. It is where we learn to turn toward God, allowing Him to reshape our habits, desires, and daily rhythms.

Where to Begin
You do not need to complete one stage before entering another. From the beginning, we encourage students to experience the full shape of the journey by starting with one course from each area:
- The Practice of the Daily Office
- The Practice of Lectio Divina
- The Practice of the Living Word
This provides a balanced beginning in purification, illumination, and union, helping students enter a life of formation that is both rooted and integrated from the start.
From Formation to Expression
The goal of spiritual formation is not simply the practice of spiritual disciplines, but the transformation they produce.
As believers are formed through prayer, Scripture, stillness, virtue, and faithful daily rhythms, that formation begins to take shape in real and visible ways:
- faithful stewardship of life and resources
- healthy and sustainable leadership
- kingdom presence in the workplace and daily life
- shared encouragement and growth in community
These are not separate from formation. They are its natural fruit.
This broader expression of formation is reflected through initiatives, communities, and ministries that help believers live out what God is forming within them.
The Goal: A Life Formed in Christ
The purpose of these practices is not the practices themselves, but the transformation they produce.
As believers remain rooted in prayer, guided by Scripture, attentive in the inner life, and faithful in daily practice, their lives are gradually shaped to reflect the character of Christ.
The Spiritual Formation Pathway provides a clear and accessible journey that helps believers move from intention to practice, from practice to formation, and from formation to faithful participation in the life and mission of the Kingdom of God.
